A valid medical fitness certificate helps show that a seafarer can perform assigned duties safely, subject to any stated limitations. The examination protects the seafarer and others on board. It should be completed honestly with a practitioner recognised for the purpose.

Before booking

Use the Marine Department’s current seafarer-health information to identify an approved medical practitioner. Confirm the clinic, practitioner, appointment requirements and accepted payment method using trusted contact details.

Prepare:

Ask the clinic whether fasting, a photograph or any additional test preparation is needed. Do not rely on an old social-media list of doctors.

During the examination

Answer health questions accurately. Hiding a condition can endanger you during a voyage and complicate appropriate care. The practitioner may review vision, hearing, general health and fitness in relation to maritime duties. The process and additional tests depend on individual circumstances and the applicable standard.

Ask for an explanation if a limitation, shorter validity period or follow-up is proposed. You are entitled to respectful handling of sensitive information, but shipboard safety and certification processes may require defined fitness information to be shared with authorised parties.

Check the certificate before leaving

Keep the original secure and a protected digital copy. Share medical details only where necessary and through appropriate channels.

If validity may expire during a voyage

Do not assume that a certificate will automatically remain acceptable. Tell the employer early and check the official rule that applies to the voyage and certificate. Plan renewals before joining where possible.

The examination is not a substitute for medical care. New symptoms, injury or illness should be addressed through the ship’s medical and emergency procedures, regardless of certificate validity.

Plan the timing carefully

Book early enough to handle referrals, further information or review without missing a joining date. Check that the expected validity covers the intended assignment, but remember that the approved practitioner—not the applicant or employer—determines the medical outcome under the applicable process.

If you work with a condition that is stable, bring accurate reports and medication information. Do not stop prescribed treatment or change a dose merely to prepare for the examination unless a qualified clinician directs it.

Privacy checklist

If a result is unexpected, ask the practitioner to explain the finding, limitation, next step and applicable review route. A second opinion or appeal must follow the recognised process; shopping for a practitioner willing to ignore a condition undermines safety.
