A convincing logo, uniform photograph or WhatsApp message does not prove that a maritime job is genuine. Fraudsters copy real company names and create urgent payment demands. Slow the process down and verify each part independently.
Common warning signs
- a job is offered without a credible interview or qualification check;
- the recruiter uses only personal messaging or a free email account;
- you must pay quickly for a “slot,” visa, guarantee or release letter;
- payment goes to an unrelated individual or cryptocurrency wallet;
- salary is unusually high for the rank and experience;
- vessel, owner or contract details keep changing;
- the offer contains copied logos, poor details or blank contract fields.
Verify three separate things
First, verify the agency using the Malaysia Marine Department seafarer portal and current official contact information. Second, contact the named employer through contact details you locate independently—not the number in the suspicious message. Third, verify the vessel name, IMO number, flag and proposed joining port.
An agency existing does not prove that a particular message came from it. Ask the official office to confirm the individual recruiter and vacancy.
Treat fees carefully
MLC-related rules restrict costs that should be placed on seafarers for recruitment or placement. Some personal document costs may be treated differently under applicable rules, but an unexplained job-placement fee is a serious warning. Ask for the legal basis, itemised invoice and official receipt before paying anything.
Protect identity and evidence
Watermark document copies with the purpose and recipient where practical. Do not share banking passwords or verification codes. Save the advertisement, profile, phone numbers, payment instructions, receipts and full message history. Report impersonation to the genuine company and seek union or official help.
Consult ITF rights resources and ITF rights under the MLC for practical information.
